Public Dissemination of 2023 Air Quality Data and Discussion on LEZ as Air Quality Improvement Solution in Jakarta

Organized by the Jakarta Environmental Agency with support from the Clean Air Catalyst, the 2023 Air Quality Monitoring Discussion and Air Quality Control Strategy Through Low Emission Zones event facilitated sharing of information about the state of AQ in Jakarta in 2023 and held a panel discussion to explore the potential of LEZ as strategic solutions for AQ improvement in Jakarta.

#TogetherForCleanAir #PamojaKwaHewaSafi Nairobi City Event and Mural Unveiling

Against the backdrop of the Africa Union Climate Action Summit and the Africa Climate Week, Nairobi will host the UNEP’s fourth annual International Clean Air Day for blue skies event with H.E. Governor Sakaja and other high-level speakers on September 7th, 2023. This year’s theme is Together for Clean Air, focusing on the need for strong partnerships, increased investment and shared responsibility to overcome air pollution. To inspire Nairobi residents and visitors to the city and highlight the theme of working together to end road pollution and protect human health, a local artist will be commissioned to paint mural in a prominent location near the Kenyatta International Convention Centre on September 7th.

Air Quality Monitors Unboxing and “For Jakarta’s Air, Let’s Ride Public Transportation” Campaign Launch - Jakarta

Clean Air Catalyst (Catalyst), In collaboration with  Daerah Khusus Ibukota (DKI) Jakarta, is hosting an inaugural event to unveil new air quality monitoring equipment, installed in stages at three new and four existing sites throughout the Jakarta metropolitan area. The equipment will provide data on local sources of air pollution, such as particulate matter, black carbon, and carbon monoxide, and will inform targeted solutions to help the city reach its clean air targets.

Nairobi Ride4Life

Nairobi will participate for the first time in the global Air Quality Awareness Week from May 1st to May 5th. The signature event will be Wednesday’s Nairobi Ride4Life, a cycling procession through the Nairobi business district to create a community movement for clean air and the provision of better and safer walking and cycling infrastructure.

Clean Air Catalyst: A Multi-level Approach to Accelerating Action on Air Quality and Climate in Cities

This session highlights the importance of integrated objectives and collaboration to the Clean Air Catalyst, a global partnership launched by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) in 2020. The five-year program, led by World Resources Institute (WRI) and Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), aims to accelerate locally tailored solutions to air pollution that also tackle climate change, improve human health, and address gender and income inequality. Representatives from Indore, India; Jakarta, Indonesia; and Nairobi, Kenya, will share their experiences in scaling up a multi-level approach in their cities.

Multistakeholder Forum: Sharing Data on Sources of Air Pollution

Air pollution in Nairobi is regularly higher than the level considered safe by the World Health Organization and poor air quality is responsible for more than 19,000 premature deaths in Kenya each year. Air pollution also affects urban livability, including impacts on commerce and outsized harm to women and children. The worst air quality is found in informal settlements, areas that house more than 70% of Nairobi’s residents.
